how does the course schedule look?

The course is conducted over two days - It has five dives, so on one of the days you'll make two course dives and on the other you'll make three (Yep, that leaves time for an optional fun dive!). Which dives you do on which days will depend on the conditions here at the time - Your instructor will advise you!

There's a small amount of theory for Advanced Open Water - You will ideally collect your manual the day before your dives and choose which dives you want to do. Then for each dive that you do, you need to complete a knowledge review (self study), these then need to be reviewed with your instructor before certification.

more about the dives you can do

Navigation (mandatory): Learn more compass navigation skills as well as natural navigation plus techniques for estimating distances underwater. Open Water Diver. PADI Adventure Dives can also count towards PADI Specialty Diver certifications.

Deep (mandatory): Explore deeper to a max depth of 30m! You'll look at planning & safety considerations for deeper dives and observe colour changes and differences with your air consumption and allowable bottom time.
Recommended:
Drift: Learn techniques for entering the water and diving in a current including deploying a surface marker. This is an excellent choice for Penida's dives as many of our dive sites are dived in this way!

Peak Performance Buoyancy: Our top recommendation! Perfect your buoyancy and trim, play buoyancy games to fine tune everything... Maybe drop some excess kilos from your weight belt and improve your air consumption.

Fish ID: Learn how to ID many types of bony fishes along Penida's abundant reefs. Look at characteristics of the fish, its habitat and behaviour to sharpen your ID skills.

Underwater Naturalist: Learn how to determine whether you're looking at a bony fish, an invertebrate or a plant. Lots of fun to be had on this dive with the incredible diversity of marine life on our sites.

More options:
Search & Recovery: Ever wondered how to find a missing object underwater? On this dive you learn search patterns to look for missing objects and also how to tie knots with rope and how to bring heavy objects to the surface safely with a lift bag.

Boat: If you've done all of your previous dives either from shore or a dock / jetty then this dive will introduce you to techniques used for diving from a boat.

Digital Underwater Imaging: Learn basic underwater photography and videography techniques, starting with the preparation of the underwater housing. Underwater you'll go through different camera settings to get wide angle and macro shots, look at different techniques for lighting and then after look at editing your images.

frequently asked questions

Can I see manta rays when taking my Advanced Open Water Diver Course?

Yes! Our manta rays dive sites rarely have current, so they're great for course dives! We need to have calm conditions to dive those sites as they're on the South side of the island, and we can check these conditions around one week in advance.

Can I start my course on the day I arrive on Nusa Penida?

No, you need to be staying on Nusa Penida the night before your first diving day.

Can I leave the island the day that I finish my course?

Yes, as long as all of your knowledge reviews have been checked with your instructor.  Dives are usually finished by 3pm, and the last boats leave the island for Sanur at 5pm.  You just can't fly until the next morning.

How many other students will be on my course with me?

We like to keep class sizes small for safety and control.  There would be a maximum of four students on the course with one instructor.

Which dive sites will I go to on my course?

We plan our dive sites based on the conditions and the objectives of your dives. If the conditions allow we can visit the manta sites and other famous sites such as Crystal Bay and SD Point. Our priority will be to choose safe dive sites appropriate for your course objectives as much as showing you awesome marine life :)
