our conservation projects

At Scuba Junkie it's no secret that we're passionate about the environment, both underwater and on land, and Scuba Junkie Penida is no different!
With the help of our conservation arm, Scuba Junkie SEAS, we hold several events and themed weeks throughout the year. These events such as Manta Week, Marine Week, Turtle Week, Shark Week as well as one day specials such as International Clean-up day are all supported with vigour. We aim to raise awareness of the threats surrounding the ocean environment among our guests and staff, plus the locals on the island. During these events we give presentations and hold workshops and outreach programmes with the local community.

WE'RE A GREEN FINS MEMBER & PADI ECO CENTER

We are a proud Green Fins Member which means that we employ environmentally friendly practices and follow the Green Fins code of conduct which promotes sustainable diving and snorkelling.
Becoming a Green Fins Member involves an assessment to check out all aspects of our operation, the operator is then scored (the less points, the better) and given targets to improve practices and policies for the coming year.
The assessors gave us an informative presentation for all dive and boat staff before setting us our targets.
You can read more about our assessment and targets here.
You can play your part and learn a lot by taking the Green Fins Diver e-Course.

Green Fins Members who also take part in PADI Adopt The Blue are also awarded PADI Eco Center status.

reducing plastic

We aim to keep our plastic use to an absolute minimum! We managed to speak to suppliers of our t-shirts and they now come without the plastic wrapper.

We don't sell drinks in single use plastic bottles and we offer free Aqua drinking water refills at our resort and on the boat.

Where possible our supplies are bought locally, supporting growers and suppliers on Nusa Penida.

citizen science

We support citizen science initiatives and encourage our guests to submit their ID photos from their dive with us on Manta Matcher, Internet of Turtles, Sharkbook, and Match My Mola. We are also happy to upload photos for our guests if they're not able to do it by themselves.
Our main avenue for citizen science is contributing to Dive The Data for every single dive that we do… We note down any megafauna that we've seen on the dive along with the site, our depth, the temperature, the visibility, number of boats on the site and whether there was any plastic trash present. This is all uploaded daily and can be viewed by region on their website.

event weeks

We invite the Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF) over for our event weeks so that they can get out on the boat for their essential data collection dives, and send them our photos of manta ray bellies to assist with the Manta Matcher database.

internships & COMMUNITY

We offer diving internships for locals, growing them from people with an interest in diving to successful, safety conscious dive professionals who are passionate about their area.

We offer our land-based staff the opportunity to snorkel and try scuba diving if they wish so that they can experience the underwater world and see what we are so passionate about as divers.

CPR & 1st Aid safety training is provided annually to all of our dive staff, boat crew and land staff.

CORALLIANCE SUPPORTERS

We are proud supporters of the Indo Ocean Project's Coralliance project - started in 2020 to provide income to locals by plantings corals on damaged areas of the reef. We offer our tanks, equipment and classroom space as they need it.

trash hero

We regularly participate in the weekly Trash Hero clean ups around the island. Every Monday we gather at 4:30pm at a different location on the island (usually on Penida's north coast). You can find the location for the cleanup each week on the Trash Hero Penida Facebook page.

Environmentally aware dive practices

As is the same at every Scuba Junkie location, we follow the S.E.A.S. guidelines - It's important that we all be have responsibly in the water to preserve the environment for future divers.

On the dive boat we provide natural (reef safe) soap spray for your mask, and we have rubbish bins so that nothing gets thrown overboard
