Your Complete Dive Trip Packing List for Nusa Penida: 12 Key Essentials for Packing with Confidence

 January 17, 2025

We all know the excitement of booking your next dive trip, and we’re thrilled you've chosen to dive with us at Scuba Junkie Penida! As you eagerly await your departure date, it’s natural to wonder what to pack for your trip to Nusa Penida. Fear not, we have you covered! Our dive trip packing list will ensure you have everything you need! Whether you’re a seasoned diver or new to dive travel, this guide will help you pack effortlessly, so you can focus on the excitement of your upcoming trip!

General Essentials for Your Dive Trip Packing List

To help you pack efficiently for your dive trip to Nusa Penida, we've provided specific information on the 5 general categories from your dive trip packing list: clothing, shoes, toiletries, electronics, and miscellaneous items, customised to the unique needs of the island.

Clothing

The air temperature on Nusa Penida ranges from 25°C to 32°C year-round, with higher humidity levels during the rainy season (December to April). When preparing your dive trip packing list, you will want to pack the clothes you normally would for a tropical destination - Light, breathable clothes will suffice throughout your trip, even in the evenings.

There’s no need to pack heavy clothing like long pants or jumpers, but we do recommend adding 2 or 3 warmer items to your dive trip packing list. These layers will help you warm up during surface intervals when diving in our cold season (July to October), or keep you warm when the sun isn’t shining on the boat during the rainy season (December to April), but also gives you an extra layer for any cooler evenings when the breeze picks up.

The dress code on Nusa Penida is quite casual, unlike some other destinations where more respectful attire is required. Focus on what you’re comfortable in for a hot climate, and don’t forget your swimwear!

While there are a few touristy clothing shops on the island, there aren’t many, so it's advisable to add all of your favourite holiday attire to your dive trip packing list. If you’re staying longer than a week, you can reduce the amount of clothes you bring by using the laundry facilities just a 2-minute walk down the road from Scuba Junkie Penida. Don't forget to save a little space for a souvenir t-shirt!

Shoes

Most islanders stick to wearing their favourite flip-flops or sandals throughout their stay, however, it's advisable to also bring sturdier shoes, especially for exploring Nusa Penida’s famous sites, such as Kelingking Beach, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach, Diamond Beach and Tembeling Beach & Forest which feature rocky and/or steep paths. Simply these two types of shoes will be enough.

Packing Tip: To save luggage space and weight, you can travel in your sturdy shoes and pack your sandals!

Toiletries

You don't particularly need to add many toiletries to your dive trip packing list, as unless you have specific brands you prefer, you can easily purchase all the essentials at the local minimarts, just a 10-minute walk from Scuba Junkie Penida. That said, you may want to consider including a few travel-sized toiletries on your dive trip packing list until you're able to stock up on the island.

If you're staying with us at our resort, we provide Sensatia Botanicals hand soap, shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner in the rooms. These high-quality, cruelty-free products are free from chemicals, artificial substances and synthetics, making them environmentally friendly.

Sunscreen is vital for your skin’s protection from UV rays. As a Green Fins dive centre, we encourage guests to include reef-safe sunscreen in their dive trip packing list to support our sustainability efforts to preserve the underwater world. If you forget this or can't find any before you travel, we do have Iwani reef-safe sunscreen available for sale at our reception.

Make sure to bring any personal medications you may need, as some items might not be available at local pharmacies, though they do carry a wide variety of pharmaceuticals.

Sanitary products can be difficult to find and expensive on the island, so be sure to include an ample supply in your dive trip packing list if you will need them.

Electronics

If you have one, be sure to include your underwater camera / GoPro and housing on your dive trip packing list to capture the ocean's beauty during your dives around Nusa Penida. You never know what amazing marine life you might encounter! Don't forget to pack charging cables and extra SD cards for your camera, as well as cables for other devices like your phone, Kindle, laptop, or iPad.

In Indonesia, sockets fit Type C and F plugs (2 round pins), commonly used in continental Europe. Be sure to bring an adapter if your country uses a different plug type, so you're all set for your charging needs. All power sockets in Indonesia provide a standard voltage of 230V with a standard frequency of 50Hz - If your home currency uses a different frequency, be sure to bring a converter.

A travel hack we recommend is to add one adapter and a small extension cable to your dive trip packing list to create multiple charging points without needing extra adapters.

Our 4-person dormitories have bunk beds and we provide extension cables to ensure that everyone has enough charging points, even the top bunks!

Our en-suite rooms have six plug sockets in the bedroom, one in the bathroom and one on the balcony.

Miscellaneous

Be sure to add a reusable water bottle to your dive trip packing list to stay hydrated and reduce single-use plastic waste. At Scuba Junkie Penida, we provide a free 24/7 water dispenser, and most restaurants and bars will refill your bottle for free upon request.

If you plan to bring valuables or items on the boat while diving, a dry bag is essential for protecting them, as even with dry space, items can still get wet. Dry bags are not readily available for purchase on the island, so it’s advisable to include one in your dive trip packing list if you plan to use one.

For those who still log their dives the “old-fashioned” way, be sure to bring your logbook to track your dives, record important details, and log marine life sightings. Plus, you can add our Scuba Junkie Penida dive stamp to your collection!

We provide towels in our rooms and dorms (bathroom towels and pool / boat towels) so if you're taking one of our dive & stay packages then you don't need to bring your own which will save you some packing weight!

Diving Equipment for Your Dive Trip Packing List

If you don’t have your own diving equipment, don’t worry, we provide high-quality gear for your diving adventures. However, we understand the comfort of using equipment you’re familiar with, so if you have your own gear, be sure to include these essentials on your dive trip packing list: mask, fins, boots, wetsuit, BCD, regulator, and dive computer.

Essential full set of scuba equipment

If you bring your own full set of equipment, we can offer you a 5% discount on our prices!

Optional gear includes a torch, dive knife, and SMB. Our dive guides carry and deploy an SMB for the group on every dive, and we provide a surface signal tube in all rental BCDs, so bringing your own SMB is entirely optional. We do not permit reef hooks, as we drift on most of the sites which have currents.

If space and weight are limited to pack all your gear, here's are some tips for cutting down on the amount of equipment you bring:

Mask

Masks aren't too big and bulky so we highly recommended at least adding your own mask to your dive trip packing list as it ensures a proper fit and there's nothing worse than having one that constantly leaks during dives. Otherwise if you don't have you own or really can't fit it in, we offer several brands that fit most people's faces.

Packing Tip: To save space you can put other smaller items, like your dive computer, inside your mask box for traveling.

Fins

Some divers prefer using their own fins to maintain trim control. However, if you're undecided whether to add your own fins to your dive trip packing list, we provide open-heel, fully adjustable Mares Avanti 3 fins in a range of sizes for you to use, a well-known and popular style/brand.

Boots

These are lightweight and compactable and essential to bring if you own them, especially as our fins require boots for wear. We also use them to protect our feet on the beach. If you don't have your own, we offer a range of short and mid-length Zee-Pro boots in sizes Eu35-Eu47.

Packing tip: If bringing your own boots and / or fins, use the space inside the boots and fin pockets for smaller items like socks and underwear to save on luggage space! If you're traveling without a mask box, put your mask in your fin's foot pocket.

Wetsuit

Wetsuits can be bulky and heavy, so you can leave it at home if limited on space. We provide Mares Rover 5.3mm long wetsuits and 3mm shorties in various sizes, plus we have a limited number of neoprene hoods. However, bringing your own layers such as rash vests, thermal layers, hooded vests, and diving jackets is advisable, especially during the colder season.

If you want to and have the space to add your own wetsuit and or layers to your dive trip packing list but are unsure which wetsuit / layers you may need depending on the time of year, you can read our other blog post "Which is the Best Wetsuit for Nusa Penida?".

BCD

Whether to add your own BCD to your dive trip packing list depends on personal preference and luggage allowance. If you have a travel BCD, we recommend bringing it for comfort, as it's light and designed for easy travel. If your BCD is not a travel one, then it’s up to you whether bring it or are happy to dive using ours. We offer high-quality, custom-made, jacket-style BCDs, which are similar to most rental BCDs worldwide.

Packing Tip: Unclip all of the buckles and detach your LPI hose, this helps to fold the BCD flatter in your bag.

Regulator

Bringing your own regulator is beneficial as you're familiar with its functions and breathing, however regulator sets are quite often the heaviest piece of equipment. If limited to weight, we provide a range of high-quality Zee-Pro, ScubaPro, and Cressi regulator sets which you could simply bring your own mouthpiece to ensure comfort.

Dive Computer

There is no question about this one. If you own a dive computer, include it on your dive trip packing list. We don’t provide dive computers within the cost of gear rental and although our guides wear dive computers and ensure you stay within no-decompression limits (NDL) according to their limits, bringing your own ensures you have immediate access to your dive data.

Alternatively, if you want to hire one from us or don't have your own, we offer Sunnto Zoop computers to rent for 150,000 IDR per day.

Final Thoughts...

If this is your first dive-oriented trip or if you’re new to diving and haven’t yet invested in your own gear, our rental equipment is included in our packages and dive trips. However, if you plan on diving frequently in the future, consider investing in your own gear for the familiarity and comfort it provides. Stay tuned for an upcoming blog post on where to start when purchasing your own dive equipment…
